Plan Your Grand Canyon Christmas

Spectacular Seasonal Views

The Grand Canyon can be a winter wonderland from December through February. Fresh white snow often dusts the rim of the canyon but only reaches a few hundred into the interior which stays warm year round. The Canyon’s winter beauty is a unique sight to behold.  Similarly, the Grand Canyon Village is especially charming this time of year, coated with snow and Christmas decorations during the holiday season. You can take all the time you want at the rim or in town because the normal crowds of the area are hibernating. If the cold is too much to bare, the Yavapai Geology Museum offers excellent views of the South Rim from its heated indoor viewing deck, or you can always grab a hot drink inside the famous El Tovar Hotel.

Cozy Accommodations

There are dozens of hotels and lodges that make Grand Canyon Village your temporary home for the holidays. You can also stay in Flagstaff (about an hour south of Grand Canyon), if you’re looking for a little more nightlife and dining during your stay. Prices range from $80 a night at into the hundreds depending on the hotel. Every hotel maintains regular hours during the winter time, allowing you to keep your schedule flexible. Peruse the shops for a last minute Christmas gift and then enjoy dinner by firelight. The spirit of the season is abound, found in the festive garlands and lights on the historic buildings, Christmas decorations in the windows, and snow and icicles add to the romance. Grand Canyon Railway & Hotel also offers rides on its scenic Polar Express (yes, just like the book). Through December, the historic locomotive puts on a special family-friendly ride which reenacts the magic of the Polar Express film complete with lively waiters, elves and of course Saint Nick himself. Best of all, the hustling crowds of the busy summer months are gone allowing you to move at your own pace and relax. Rooms are more available than in the summer, but it’s still best to book your stay in advance.

A Memorable Holiday

Christmas is a magical time of year that many people consider their favorite holiday. Cozy cottages and winter scenery set the stage for a season of love and generosity punctuated by the start of a new year. Even Christmas, however, can feel repetitive. After years of driving to grandma’s or hosting your own holiday, a different way to do Christmas may sound inviting. Christmas at the Grand Canyon is an amazing way to refresh your holiday spirit and have a unique Christmas that you’ll remember forever.
